Overview

We are looking for a dynamic and adaptive leader with proven experience at senior level, who will lead the Board and work effectively with the interim Chief Executive, John McLeish, his leadership team and our dedicated, committed and experienced staff.  Additionally, the Chair will be responsible for the final selection of a new permanent CEO for the next phase of growth for MGS.

The Chair will help steer the strategic direction of the organisation, overseeing its effective governance, financial accountability and its delivery of value as a national development body, in line with sector priorities.  The successful candidate must be a highly effective collaborator, influencer and communicator, positively representing Museums Galleries Scotland in public and in the media.  Importantly, he or she must have a passion for, and an understanding of, the museum sector and the value it delivers to all our lives culturally, socially and economically.

About Museums Galleries Scotland

Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) is the National Development Body for Scottish museums and galleries, providing key support in the form of strategic investment, advice, advocacy and skills development.  MGS has an annual budget of around £2.5m and a staff team of more than 20 people.  We are also a registered charity.

We seek to appoint a new Chair to lead MGS in the delivery of the ambitions set out in Going Further: The National Strategy for Scotland’s Museums and Galleries, for the benefit of the museum sector, and the people of Scotland.
