Overview

Community Housing and Therapy are seeking a new Chair and new Trustees to support the new Chief Executive in taking the organisation forward to a sustainably successful future as a provider of an alternative, better, more humane treatment and care service for people in severe mental distress.

Community Housing and Therapy is a small charity providing psychologically informed residential recovery communities for people experiencing severe mental distress including psychosis, personality disorder, often with additional behavioural challenges such as substance dependency or self-harm. We use a unique model based on Psychologically Informed Environments, Therapeutic Communities, psychotherapy, and socially applied psychodynamic neuroscience.

Our communities are based in Eastbourne, Waltham Forest, and Old Coulsdon, and we have supported living services in Surbiton and Southall; we currently house around 50 people at any one time. We anticipate expanding our services by at least 50% over the next two to three years, but wish to remain relatively small so that we can focus on quality.

This is an exciting stage in our development: we have new Chief Executive (one year in post in June); we have reorganised our staffing structure, introducing new roles for qualified psychotherapists and a part-time psychiatrist; we have created a new training programme; we have increased our occupancy and the number of referrals we receive; we have opened a crisis and respite service; we have introduced new outcomes monitoring systems; and we have increased the participation of our residents in many areas of the organisation. We are also just developing a fundraising capacity, and will shortly be putting in our first funding bids, and we are refocusing our marketing with a new marketing strategy. We are in the process of registering with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for the provision of Treatment of Disease, Disorder, and Injury (TDDI), and we have an ambitious five year plan to deliver an excellent programme of treatment and care as an alternative to mainstream mental health services.

There remains much to do for us to achieve our ambition of becoming a sustainably successful niche provider of excellent treatment and care for people experiencing high levels of severe mental distress. Good governance is crucial to this, and the Trustees and Chief Executive believe it is time for the renovation of the Board to support this ambition.

The current Chair will stand down, but continue in a clinical role as an advisor to the clinical team, and offering supervision to the psychiatrist; he, and the rest of the Trustees, will be available to support the new Chair in the transition to recruiting and developing a new Board of Trustees.

Please see the Role of Chair document for more information on the role and person specification.

How To Apply:

Please email peterc@cht.org.uk, explaining why you want to be Chair of CHT, how you meet the person spec, and what you believe you bring to the role; please also attach a short CV.

The closing date for this role is 30th June.

Interviews will be held mid-July, date to be confirmed.

If you would like an informal conversation about the organisation, please email peterc@cht.org.uk and arrange a time.

Thank you for your interest
