Overview

Our mission – “to promote global friendship and understanding among our students”.

At International Students House (ISH), we are driven by the mission of providing an opportunity for students from all over the world to live together and to learn about each other’s cultures within a “safe, engaging, respectful and fun environment”.

Based in central London, ISH currently provides affordable accommodation for students from over 100 nations and over 60 higher education institutions. Underpinned by the desire to promote better international relations and cultural understanding amongst future leaders of the global community, ISH not only provides cheaper living, but also social engagement, extracurricular activities, support services to international students, and scholarships to enable overseas students to study in London and to return home to assist in their country’s development. Fundamentally, ISH provides talented young people with a “home away from home” at one of the most crucial stages in their lives and personal development.

We have an ambitious long-term strategy to increase residential accommodation for international and home students to provide affordable student accommodation and related social and study facilities. In short, the vision of ISH is: –

‘to provide an affordable home-from-home for international and UK students, supported by a substantial scholarship/bursary programme to give opportunities to more disadvantaged students, and reinforced by a social and cultural programme to encourage international friendships.’

At an exciting juncture in the development of ISH, we are now seeking a new Chair, to succeed Baroness Diana Warwick, who completed her successful term of office in July 2017.

In an environment of continuing global political and economic uncertainty the challenges are many. Continuing changes in UK higher education policy in regulation, research and teaching; technological and digital innovation; government visa & immigration policy and the ongoing uncertainty regarding the impact of Brexit and the increasing economic and financial pressures of London as a capital City are at crisis levels. Yet these challenges also present significant opportunity. Recent successes with astute property management and disposal, mean that ISH has a range of strategic options to consider, such as developing partnerships, new build and/or capital investment, to name a few, which will shape the future of the organisation. At a pivotal point for ISH, this will require both careful analysis and assessment as well as the creative input of novel ideas.

Our new Chair will play a vital role in leading the Board of Governors/Trustees and supporting our Chief Executive, Martin Chalker, and his Senior Management Team, in developing ISH’s strategy, such as to enhance our mission and ensure our long-term sustainability. The new Chair will bring excellent strategic leadership skills together with evident experience of non-executive governance, ideally with knowledge of both commercial/private sector and charitable organisations. They should be committed to the mission and purpose of ISH and genuinely interested in improving the international student experience to enhance mutual cultural understanding amongst the next generation of future leaders in our global society. The relevance of our mission has never been more important.
