Remuneration: £311 per meeting
Appointment start date: investigation committee: x1 on 1 October 2017 and x1 on 1 January 2018; education, standards and registration committees: all on 01 October 2017
Time commitment: part time (approx. 5 days per annum for education and investigation committees and 3 days for registration and standards committees)

We are the regulator for the optical professionals in the UK. We currently register around 29,000 optometrists, dispensing opticians, student opticians and optical businesses.
We are seeking to appoint nine lay members: two to our investigation committee, two to our education committee, two to our standards committee and three to our registration committee.
These appointments are lay positions and are therefore not open to anyone who is, or has ever been registered with the GOC, or a director of a body corporate registered with the GOC, or holds a qualification that would entitle them to apply for registration.
It is essential for public protection and confidence in the professions that our Council has access to a wide range of expertise on our committees. Each committee plays a vital role in enhancing our work and informing the decisions made by our Council.
This is a great opportunity for personal development. The work is challenging, varied and you will be able to learn from the experience of your committee colleagues as well as sharing your own.
Interviews will be held in our London office on 8 and 11 September 2017 for the registration and standards committees, on 12 September 2017 for the education committee and on 13 September 2017 for the investigation committee
We are looking for individuals who bring a fresh perspective and we particularly welcome applications from candidates who can reflect the mix of our registrants and patients. You will need to be able to demonstrate effective communication skills and have the ability to develop constructive and supportive working relationships. In particular, applicants for the investigation committee will need to be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills, the ability to process large volumes of (and often complex) material, exercise judgment, and demonstrate a strong capacity for empathy.
