Overview

Domesday Book. Shakespeare’s will. Tweets from Downing Street. War time records. These are just some of the 11 million items held by The National Archives. To make the most of this rich collection – one of the largest in the world – we’ve set out an ambitious, audience-focused strategy. As a Non-Executive Board Member, you’ll help us continue to transform and achieve our vision.

About the role

Our strategic plan, Archives Inspire, is driving our evolution. We aim to be a partner for government, a leader in cutting-edge research and a place to visit and be inspired. In response to the fundamental challenges and opportunities digital technologies present, we are continually adapting so that we can become a digital archive by instinct and design. To complete this transformation, we need strong Non-Executive Board members who can advise, support and challenge the Board, while providing critical insight.

Much depends on your ability to work closely with stakeholders and respond to their differing needs. It’s vital to understand others’ views, negotiate and contribute to collective decisions. At the same time, you’ll uphold high standards of governance, checking that financial controls and risk management are robust and well managed. Depending on your experience, you may be asked to join the Audit & Risk Committee.

About you

Your personal and professional experience will form a vital part of the Board’s dynamic. You’ll need a background within a relevant sector and senior leadership expertise. Articulate, analytical and a skilled strategic thinker, you’ll bring a fresh, constructive view and the highest ethical standards.

We’re looking for a leader with gravitas, enthusiasm and the time to engage with our vision and people. If you’d like to play our part in our progress, this is your opportunity.
