Exeter Science Park Ltd. has been established to drive a knowledge-based economy in the South West. Exeter is home to a wide range of science businesses and technology start-ups, with the site already the location for one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers for the Met Office. Our aim is to grow science, technology, engineering, data, environmental and medicine enterprises across the region; encouraging knowledge sharing between scientists and business, as well as incubating new, disruptive technologies. The ultimate vision, by 2030, is for multiple, state of the art buildings, housing high-tech start-up companies, employing thousands of innovative employees with a passion for science and technology, supported by a thriving innovation eco-system


The Role:

As a result of retirements, we are seeking two dynamic, energetic, Non-Executive Directors, who have a passion for science, technology and innovation, to guide and challenge the strategic direction of the Science Park.


This is a really exciting time to be part of Exeter Science Park; with a new CEO at the helm, she is developing a business plan to build on the success of generating over £50m to establish the Park and securing its first clients.  Using your experience of leading businesses, your role will be to guide, support and challenge her plans to ensure they are financially viable and there is the right balance of risk to take the Science Park to the next stage of its development.


Your expertise will be used to guide the Science Park’s strategy for creating collaborative opportunities and constructively challenging and contributing to a business plan which enables STEM companies to thrive on the Park. Experience of using existing networks to connect businesses, linking to universities and attracting financial investment to the region are the types of expertise we need to realise the Park’s vision.  Your role of Non-Executive Director will be driven by your experience and how it can best be utilised to shape the direction and implementation of the Exeter Science Park plan.


A key feature of the development of this site is to build new units to the right specification to encourage interaction, innovation and problem solving amongst our STEM community. A knowledge and understanding of property development and management are also areas of importance to the skills mix of the board.


As an ambassador for the Science Park, you will also take pride in promoting the Park to relevant stakeholders in your existing network in order to attract interest and funding into the Science Park for the benefit of the local economy.


The Person:

As a person, you are energetic and passionate about promoting innovation, science and technology and can effectively combine this with your experience of leading organisations to constructively challenge and support the strategic direction of the Science Park.  You have the vision, independence of judgement and commitment to help the Science Park thrive in the years to come, combined with the ability to judge which decisions are yours to take. Ideally with strong financial experience, you will have demonstrated your ability to easily interpret strategic financial accounts and management information and can contribute to key financial decisions to drive company performance.


You will have an extensive network of relevant contacts either in the South West or in sectors of interest to the Board.  Most important to the Board’s development is exceptional commercial aptitude, which may come from your experience of venture capital, your involvement in high-tech start-up companies, property management or STEM organisations generally.


You are entrepreneurial in your style and through experience, understand the different needs of start-up companies and large, publicly funded organisations and can use this insight to advise and guide business plans and growth.


The Rewards and Term:

This is a 3-year term, non-remunerated post providing you with the opportunity to play an influential role in one of the most exciting projects the South West has to offer.  As well as contributing to the success of the Exeter Science Park, this role gives you the opportunity to broaden your experience and enhance your own career, developing knowledge and skills that you can use in your other leadership roles.  On average, you could expect to spend 1-2 days per month on this role.
