Identifying and then encouraging high quality candidates, from a broad range of professional backgrounds, to become Non-Executives on NHS boards is a challenging task. NHS Trusts and Foundation Trusts are complex organisations operating within a tightly regulated sector. As most Trusts’ turnover can be measured in £100s millions (some being over £1 billion), and as staff numbers are measured in 1000’s or 10,000s, membership of an NHS Board brings significant responsibility, expectation and exposure for individual Non-Executive Directors.
A lack of Non-Executive Director experience has become something of a barrier to aspiring Non-Executive Directors, with the impact being felt more among candidates from a BAME background, female or disabled. With the introduction of the Workforce Race Equality Standard reporting, the diversity of Trust boards rightly remains in the spotlight.
Diverse boards help ensure services reflect the needs and experiences of the people they serve, leading to more effective decision-making.
This challenge has prompted us at GatenbySanderson to develop The Insight Programme, in partnership with sponsoring Trusts, to give aspirant Non-Executive Directors first-hand experience of how NHS Boards operate.
With an emphasis on individuals whose backgrounds tend to be under-represented on NHS Boards, the Programme is designed to offer practical help when applying for NHS Non-Executive roles. It entails two consecutive attachments to NHS Trusts or Foundation Trusts, which will include attendance at Board meetings, buddying with a current NHS non-executive director, mentoring from each Chair and ongoing support and feedback from us at GatenbySanderson.
NHS boards seek Non-Executive Directors from a wide range of professional backgrounds and industries, including the private sector, the wider public sectors and the not for profit sector.
We are currently taking applications for the 2018 Programme intake for the region of Yorkshire. If you are interested in applying for this opportunity or would like further information, please visit www.theinsightprogramme.com or contact Michelle Atkinson email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org
The Insight Programme runs nationally, so if you live in another region but have an interest in the Programme, we encourage you to make contact for a general discussion and further information.
Closing date for applications Friday 2nd March 2018.
