Overview

Southwark Playhouse are looking for a Treasurer to join the board of trustees and take the lead on advising the staff team and trustees on financial management for the organisation, ensuring its financial viability and seeing that proper financial records and procedures are maintained.

Summary Responsibilities

Ensure effective governance of the organisation.
Lead and mentor the senior team of the organisation.
Assist with fundraising.
Be a particular resource (the main “port of call”) in one or two areas that play to your strengths and expertise.
Detailed Responsibilities

Take the lead in overseeing the financial affairs of Southwark Playhouse at trustee level.
Ensure that proper financial records and procedures are maintained.
Mentor the senior team of Southwark Playhouse in financial matters – for both the charity (the theatre operation) and its trading subsidiary (the bar operation).
Assist other trustees to perform their financial duties by interpreting and explain accounting requirements, ensuring that the board receives reports containing the information trustees need in an ‘easy to understand’ format.
Ensure effective governance of the organisation.

Ensure that the organisation has a clear direction including both a long-term business plan and shorter-term objectives.
Ensure that employees of – and key stakeholders within – the organisation understand these objectives and how their own role contributes towards achievement of these objectives.
Ensure that the organisation complies with its Memorandum & Articles of Association and any relevant legislation and regulations.
Safeguard the good name and values of the organisation.
Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
Ensure financial stability of and effective financial controls for the organisation.
Lead and mentor the senior team of the organisation.

Periodically select and appoint a new Chief Executive.
Ensure that the Chief Executive receives periodic personal objectives.  These objectives should be “SMART” (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and with Timescales attached).
Ensure that the Chief Executive receives periodic personal appraisals against these objectives.  These appraisals should be fair, constructive, provide support so as to maximise the Chief Executive’s chance of achieving his/her objectives, and provide room for honest and independent feedback on the Trustees’ own performance.
Ensure that the Chief Executive cascades these best-practices down through the rest of the organisation.
Be a “sounding board” and mentor for all members of the senior team should they wish to discuss issues.
Assist with fundraising.

All Trustees are expected to use their best endeavours to help the organisation reach its fundraising objectives through a combination of personal giving, networking with friends/colleagues/family and assisting with approaches to businesses/trusts/government sources.

Supporting Information

Remuneration – trustees serve on an honorary basis. However, expenses reasonably incurred in connection with their duties will be reimbursed.

Trustee meetings – take place quarterly, usually on Monday evenings from 6.30pm in, or around, Elephant and Castle, SE1.

About Southwark Playhouse Theatre Company

As a registered charity, Southwark Playhouse exists to be a platform for new and emerging theatre companies and practitioners to showcase their work in London.

In doing so it presents a varied programme of theatre from new writing to reimagined revivals in uniquely flexible and dynamic theatre spaces.

It also exists to engage its local community by offering a range of drama related activities that promote learning and social cohesion.

Over the next few years Southwark Playhouse will be initiating a capital campaign and relocating to a new purpose built venue which will expand the scope of the theatre’s operations.
