About Actors of Dionysus (aod)

Actors of Dionysus (aod) are a national and international touring theatre company, specialising in new adaptations of Ancient Greek drama in modern English translation and new writing inspired by ancient Greek myth. aod are a registered charity and limited company with almost 25 years of experience - Our aim is to make new versions of ancient Greek drama that are exciting, thought provoking and visually stimulating and to make them powerful and relevant for a modern audience, both young and old.

Our mission statement is to make magic from myth by creating beautiful work that transforms, provokes and inspires. Our work marries ancient myth with a highly accessible, visual and innovative performance style, making Classic Greek plays alive for today.

There are 2 distinct and complimentary strands to our work: new versions of ancient Greek tragedy in modern adaptation and (more recently) new writing inspired by Greek myth, often performed with an aerial/circus dimension. In both strands we offer support to young and emerging artists, whether they are Writers, Directors, Assistant Directors or associates and we initiated a mentoring programme in 2016, that seeks to nurture creative talent.

We have a long standing commitment to our schools audiences and have in place a highly established Outreach Programme of educational workshops, talks and publications, including DVDs and audiobooks. We have a portfolio of educational material which supports the teaching of Classics in schools, colleges and in further education.

In 2012 we set up a third strand to aod called aodevents, a fundraising arm of high end events called Dionysia at prestigious venues with well known names and celebrities. Most recently for aodevents we performed our fifth Dionysia with Antigone at a private garden in Kingston. Other high profile venues include the home of European Commission in London, The House of St Barnabas and Allington Castle. These events are designed to help sustain the company, increase our profile but fundamentally to help fundraise for our education programme and for future projects.

Our current touring production is a 10 week tour of a new, dystopian version of Antigone, working with emerging writer Christopher Adams.

"Technically very clever, emotionally gripping and character driven production, exploring modern dilemmas - won't miss another aod production - brilliant" 10/10
