Watertrek is a Franco-British charity involved in protecting aquatic ecosystems, i.e. our very own waterways and oceans. It provides environmental education and citizen science programs to fight against the global epidemic of plastic waste and pollution; and such programming is achieved through the unique medium of stand-up paddling (SUP) and other such nautical activities. At its core, Watertrek offers a playful and physical approach the environmental education, awareness and action.
Its primary means of intervention lies in three key areas: Plastic Pollution, Climate Change and Water Quality. Its mission is to educate, initiate and federate a community of like-minded waterway users; drawing upon the rest of the world attention and awareness of the vital need to reconnect human beings with nature and its waters so to better measure the challenges of its preservation.
Watertrek is primarily operated from France and England and in that context, it is specifically structured around a network of local hubs, now based in Paris, Brittany, Normandy, the French Riviera, Belgium and London. Throughout this growing geographic network, Watertrek organises events such as SUP paddles focused on river clean-ups, marathon SUP paddles to draw attention to plastic pollution, and many other hosted environment education programs, like the current Plastic Ocean Festival, combining screenings and foreshore waste collections. It is also engaged in sustainable and circular economy projects linked to aquatic practices and environmental education in India, Thailand, and Myanmar – the last instance of which it runs new exciting Mangrove growth projects. In addition to educational programs by means of SUP, Watertrek also delivers its message through its various films, contents, SUP eco-expeditions and key partnerships in the charity and SUP communities (discover more through our website and blog www.watertrek.org).
Watertrek is directed by its founder Séverine Vasselin, a French Actress based in London. She has optimized the efficiency of delivering Watertrek’s mission through the development and commitment of a group of core volunteers running local hubs throughout Western Europe and Asia; but Watertrek has ambitions beyond this, which is necessary to fight against the global scale of pollution that continues to harm our earth. Our communication components are run by a partner company in Barcelona, Spain called Total SUP; while our main sponsor – Starboard – is headquartered in Bangkok, Thailand.
