Navigating a non-executive and coaching career: Insights from a long-standing NEDonBoard member, Alison Graham

Transitioning into a non-executive career is a journey of discovery, learning, and making strategic choices. We recently had the opportunity to speak with Alison Grahm, one of our long-standing NEDonBoard members, who took the Joining a Not-for-Profit Board certificate to ensure she could effectively discharge her duties as a trustee. She shared her experience of balancing charity roles and freelance coaching, pursuing paid NED roles, offering valuable insights for professionals considering a non-executive path.

The overlap between coaching and boardroom skills

One of the most striking realisations in Alison’s journey was the similarity between the skills needed for coaching and those required for board roles. Both demand the ability to listen, understand complex challenges, guide strategic discussions, and drive impactful decisions. Despite this overlap, she faced a crucial choice: whether to focus on paid NED roles or grow her coaching practice. Given her limited capacity, she opted for the latter while maintaining voluntary board positions.

As a coach, Alison has developed a deeper ability to engage in high-level conversations, challenge perspectives, and create space for strategic reflection. Those are key attributes that enhance boardroom effectiveness. The ability to truly listen and be present, skills honed in coaching, are highly transferable to governance roles where thoughtful contribution and facilitation are essential.

The benefits of coaches in the boardroom

Alison’s experience highlights the valuable role that coaches can play in the boardroom. Boards recognise the importance of emotional intelligence, facilitation, and the ability to foster diverse perspectives. Her ACCA qualification, ongoing professional development with NEDonBoard, trustee experience, combined with coaching expertise have allowed Alison to:

  • Ask insightful and open-ended questions that drive strategic thinking.
  • Support and challenge executive leadership constructively.
  • Create an inclusive and psychologically safe environment for board discussions.
  • Navigate complex stakeholder dynamics with empathy and clarity.

Conclusion

Alison’s journey highlights the importance of making strategic career choices, recognising transferable skills, and leveraging professional networks.

For those considering a non-executive career, engaging with NEDonBoard and taking courses like Joining a Not-for-Profit Board can be valuable first steps. The key is to remain open to opportunities, recognise your strengths, and take proactive steps toward your professional aspirations.
