Organisations across industries face increasing scrutiny over financial performance and sustainability, risk management, and long-term success. CFA Charterholders are uniquely positioned to bring analytical and problem-solving skills, strategic insight, and a strong ethical compass to boardrooms.
Boards carry ultimate responsibility for setting strategy, overseeing financial performance, and ensuring the organisation’s long-term sustainability and resilience. Central to this role is effective oversight of capital allocation, investment decisions, risk management, and the balance between risk and return.
Investment and capital allocation. Capability in investment analysis, valuation, and portfolio construction, enabling informed oversight of strategic and capital deployment decisions.
Advanced understanding of risk management, resilience across business models and market conditions and financial markets.
Strong financial acumen. The ability to interrogate financial performance, capital structures, and funding decisions with rigour and independence.
Ethical and fiduciary discipline that underpins sound judgement, accountability, and trust at board level.
Long-term value perspective. Analytical rigour and strategic insight focused on sustainable performance and effective Non-Executive Directorship.
NEDonBoard, Institute of Board Members, in collaboration with CFA UK, has developed a series of educational sessions and professional development opportunities for CFA Charterholders. They are designed to progress board-level thinking, strengthen understanding of governance and oversight, and support CFA Charterholders who are beginning to explore a transition to the boardroom.
While interest in non-executive roles continues to grow, the market is often misunderstood, particularly by professionals approaching it for the first time.

We will explore the different types of NED roles available across sectors, how remuneration varies by organisation size and risk profile, and where board opportunities are realistically sourced, including what does not work as well as what does.
